UAS Swarms: Cybersecurity, IoT, Ubiquitous Sensing, Networking & Computing
Thursday, February 21, 2019, 10:00am

As recent events at Gatwick and Newark airports have highlighted, small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) can be a major disruptive force for civilian (and by extension) military flight operations. In this talk we look at the confluence of technologies associated with the arrival of 5G Wi Fi, sensor networks, the internet of things, and cybersecurity and how these technologies will affect the next generation of UAS in both a positive and negative manner.

We will highlight a roadmap of existing and forthcoming research efforts that are examining these issues from a systems perspective including the new role that swarms of small UAS might play in the civilian and defense sectors.

Hanumant Singh is a Professor in the Dept of ECE at Northeastern University. He has extensive experience working with underwater, surface and aerial unmanned systems. He has worked on UAS, USVs, AUVs, ROVs, manned submersibles and towed vehicles on research experiments and deployment around the world. The Seabed AUV and Jetyak Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) developed in his lab have been comercilized in two separate efforts.

His work in UAS includes deployments in extreme environments and in understanding the roles of cybersecurity, networking, sensing and computing for these platforms.

He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Field Robotics and the technical lead for the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society's Unmanned Vehicles group. He has received numerous awards including the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in 2005 and the King-Sun Fu Memorial Best IEEE Transactions on Robotics award in 2006.
